When Walt Disney set out to create Disney World in Orlando, Florida, he wanted to design more than just another theme park. Although pleased with Disneyland, Walt wanted something bigger. While his new design incorporated many of the similar rides and operation schemes as Disneyland, Disney chose to take full advantage of the Florida real estate available when creating Disney World. The end result is a much larger, much more exclusive park that truly is a world of its own.
When designing Walt Disney world, Walt wanted to create a world within a world. In order to reach Disney World, guests must drive to the outskirts of Orlando and through a maze of privately owned roads. The purpose of this design was to make guests feel as though they were leaving the every day world, and entering another: Disney World. The plan worked. Even Orlando natives can spend a day in the park and feel as though they are visiting an exotic fantasy-land thousands of miles from home.
The original design plans of Walt Disney World included five Disney hotels, each featuring a different theme. And with more than 30,000 acres of land at his disposal, Mr. Disney was free to design the largest and grandest resorts his imagination could deliver. Unlike Disneyland in Anaheim, California (which is centrally located and with very little room to expand), Walt Disney World in Orlando has room to grow.
The Five Original Disney Resort Hotels
The first of these five hotels is the Contemporary Resort. Featuring a futuristic design theme, this resort offers the first-of-its-kind private monorail system. Guests who choose to stay at the Contemporary resort are offered transportation to and from the park via the Disney monorail which runs directly through the lobby of the resort.
The next original hotel is Disneys Polynesian resort. Designed to mirror the luxuriant and tropical region of the South Pacific, the Polynesian resort features white sand beaches, koi ponds, volcanic rocks, and more. Sparing no expense, Disney even insisted that the hotel feature more than 100 different species of vegetation native to Polynesia. Both the Polynesian and Contemporary resorts boast a family-friendly atmosphere and offer amenities such as day care and family theme park packages.
The Venetian, Asian, and Persian resorts were designed but never built. The reasons for this decision vary but were centered primarily on the location and size of the park at that time as well as the intended course of the monorail. Had they built these hotels, the length and number of stops of the monorail would have been greatly increased (much to Disneys dismay).
Today, there are more than 20 different accommodation choices at Disney World Park. These accomodations include 10 deluxe resorts, four moderate resorts, four value resorts, five Disney vacation club resorts and an area featuring cabins and campgrounds. Despite the vast expansion, however, Disney World remains a remote yet accessible fantasy land offering something to suit every aesthetic and every budget.

Disney Travel: Walt Disney World Hotels

The original design of Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida included plans for five luxury resorts. This design was genius in that it prevented guests from having to leave the Disney compound. By keeping visitors nearby, Disney could capitalize on every aspect of his guests vacations, and make sure that every detail was marked with the Disney stamp of approval.
The Genius Behind Walt Disney World Hotels
The vast amount of real estate surrounding Walt Disney World was not acquired by accident. In purchasing over 30,000 acres of land, Walt Disney made it nearly impossible for non-Disney hotels to compete with his deluxe, theme-park-adjacent resorts. Be keeping convenience at the forefront of his design, he made it easy for guests to forget that there were other accommodation options.
To this day, the closest non-Disney-affiliated hotels require a twenty minute drive from the gates of the park. Granted, these hotels might offer more affordable prices, but what they make up for in price they lack in convenience. Guests who stay at a Disney hotel dont have to pay for Disney World parking. In addition, they can go to and from the park and their hotel room without having to drive at all. Everything within the Disney World complex is a monorail or complimentary tram ride away.
Walt Disney was no dummy. His design of the Walt Disney World compound literally made outside competition a nearly impossible feat. From Disney operated campsites to deluxe resorts and hotels, Walt wanted his world to be available to people of all age, race, and financial standing.

Disney Travel: Downtown Disney Hotels

When Walt Disney set out to design Disney World, he imagined a place where everyone could have fun. In addition to its vast complex of theme parks and beautiful landscapes, the Walt Disney World compound also boasts an adult friendly metropolis called Downtown Disney. A miniature city featuring five-star-restaurants, nightclubs, movie theaters, and stores, Downtown Disney offers guests a glimpse of what normal life might be like if everything was run by the Mouse.
Downtown Disney Hotels and Attractions
If I could only use one word to describe Downtown Disney in Orlando, Florida, it would be classy. Down to the last detail, Downtown Disney is designed and operated in a tasteful, sophisticated, and truly enjoyable manner. From mouth watering restaurants to awe-inspiring entertainment, Downtown Disney offers the best of big-city-living without any of the negatives.
One of the things I like most about Downtown Disney is the fact that it gives adults a place to escape during their family vacations. Since nearly all of Disneys hotels offers child care services, parents can leave their children in good hands while they experience some romance and big kid fun (Disney style). Whether you choose to take in the breathtaking Cirque du Soleil show La Nouba (created exclusively for Walt Disney World) or simply want to browse the shops, rest assured you will have an amazing time visiting Downtown Disney.
If you are planning a trip to Walt Disney World any time soon, I encourage you to set aside some time to explore Downtown Disney. There are seven Downtown Disney are hotels including the Wyndham Palace Resort & Spa, the Hilton in the Walt Disney World Resort, and the Holiday Inn in the Walt Disney World resort. Depending on your personal preference and budget, you are certain to find a great place to stay.

Disney Travel: Orlando Disney Hotels

When it comes to Orlando Disney hotels, there are a myriad of options to consider. The great thing about the Walt Disney World complex in Orlando is the fact that it was designed to include something for every aesthetic and every budget. Whether you choose to treat yourself to a luxury Disney vacation at the Grand Floridian Resort and Spa, or you prefer a more rustic experience at Disneys Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground, Disney has what you are looking for.
Orlando Disney Hotels and Resorts
Unlike most theme parks in America, Walt Disney World is a vast compound made up of over 30,000 acres of pristine landscape, Disney operated hotels, theme parks, five-star restaurants, and more. Once you enter the world-famous Disney gates, you literally never have to leave. From child care and pet services to dry cleaning and private concierge assistance, Disney World has everything you could ever possibly need right at your fingertips.
The great thing about Walt Disney World is the fact that guests are able to choose their experience. Walt Disneys design was such that he wanted everyone to be able to afford a trip to his park. At the same time, he wanted guests to have the opportunity to experience pure luxury and opulence like nothing of its kind. Thus, deluxe resorts like the Animal Kingdom lodge feature five-star accommodations and amenities while value resorts such as Disneys All-Star Movies resort offer standard lodging with classic Disney flair.
Attention to detail is what makes Disney World such a magical place. Guests who stay at the value resorts are treated no differently than those residing at the deluxe resorts. And with Disney characters waiting to delight around every corner, children of all ages will have a wonderful time regardless of where they choose to stay.

Disney Travel: Hotels Near Disney

There are 23 hotels near Disney located within the gates of the compound. With the style and cost of these resorts broken into five different categories, guests of all types can find the right accommodations to suit their personal and financial needs. From luxury resorts to standard hotels, Walt Disney designed his park so that no family would be left out.
Resorts and Hotels near Disney
The five Disney hotel categories are as follows: deluxe resorts with prices starting at $199 per night; moderate resorts with prices starting at $134 per night; value resorts starting at $77 per night, Disney vacation club resorts starting at $259 per night; and campgrounds starting at $35 per night. As you can see, the prices and types of Disney accommodations vary in order to best include guests of all financial capabilities.
To give you an idea of the different accommodation styles, I would like to offer the following descriptions of two resorts located on different ends of the price spectrum. Disneys BoardWalk Inn, for instance, is a deluxe resort that sits on the Lake Buena Vista waterfront and features room service, babysitting service, several pools featuring waterslides, tennis, watercraft rentals, a health club, and luxury accommodations. With its old-fashioned charm and elegant appointments, the BoardWalk Inn is truly deluxe.
While not as luxurious, Disneys Pop Century Resort is just as Mouse-friendly. Featuring several pools, in-room-pizza-delivery, babysitting services, arcades, playgrounds, and comfortable accommodations, the Pop Century resort offers budget conscious guests Disney-style lodging at a very reasonable price. Just a hop, skip, and a jump from the theme parks, Pop Century is a terrific low-budget value.
